Feel the fear and do it anyway

Hi Motivation Seekers, how was your week?  Did you manage to have a perfection free week?  I hope so and I hope it took the pressure off.  I spoke last week about how perfectionism was generally a result of feeling fearful about something.  So this week, I thought it would be good to examine that a bit further.

As our quote says, fear is just a state of mind, but it can totally rule our lives if we let it.  The thing with fear is to face it.  When we do that, we usually find that it isn’t anywhere as bad as we thought it was going to be and that alone will shrink the fear.

What’s the worst that can happen?

When my husband and I first built our new cafe/bakery, it ended up costing heaps more than we had planned.  For people who had never really borrowed money, that was major for us.  I was especially stressed about it all.  It felt big and scary and made me feel massively insecure and I just constantly worried about how we would cope, that we could fail and lose everything.  See how it becomes a state of mind?  Was all that worrying achieving anything other than making me feel really bad?  It was becoming a big problem for me, I had trouble sleeping and the fear of loss was overwhelming for me.  Finally, we spoke about it, it was important that it got out into the open and got discussed.  The first thing we did was to talk about what if the fears came true and we lost everything?  How bad would it be?  We looked at that and realised that we would still have each other, we would still have our families.  We could sell up everything we owned, buy a campervan and hit the road.  We could get temporary work as we drove around the country… actually sounded like an alright plan!  It was an outcome that didn’t seem all that bad.  Once we thought that, all the fears dropped away.  When the fear went, things started to go a lot better. Facing the fear, shrunk it down, so it didn’t overwhelm me anymore.

Here’s  what I want you to try this week.  If there is something you really, really want to do, but you know fear is holding you back, face that fear.  First, identify what the fear is.  You may need to practise some meditation to get the right answer on that.  Still your mind, open your heart and you will discover what the fear is and where it has come from.  You are then in a perfect position to do something about it.  As we did, look at it, think what the worst possible outcome could be and shrink that fear down to size.  Let me know how you get on.  Have an absolutely brilliant, fear free week.
