Find Purpose and Love Your Work

Just for today, I let go of worry

Just for today, I let go of anger

Just for today, I am grateful

Just for today, I am working honestly

Just for today, I am showing kindness to all living things

Hello Motivation Seekers and welcome to another Motivator to get you through your week.  Did you manage to practise gratitude last week?  I hope you did and that you can make it a regular habit, as I know it will be amazing for you.

This week, we are continuing on with the next Reiki Principle, “just for today, I am working honestly.”  What does that mean?  I have always felt a bit mixed up about this, as in the work I do with clients, I really try to help them work less hard.  My aim is always to help my clients work smarter rather than harder.  However, I think the key to this is to work with integrity, and to work on the things that are important and will make a difference.  It is also about our mindset about work.  If you have dragged yourself into work today, feeling sorry that you are there, when you would rather be lying on a beach, you are not going to be in a productive mindset.  You will be in the “poor me” mindset, the one where scarcity and disempowerment lives.  Let’s not be in that place.  So, hear are some tips to help:

Make it your daily intention to do your best work

How we feel, and what we tell ourselves has a huge bearing on what we do.  If we start of our day, with the intention of being the very best you can be, working with integrity, telling yourself that you will enjoy your work and do it to the best of your ability, the actions that will make that happen, will follow.  Language is a very powerful way to change your mindset.  Say it, believe it and your actions will follow.

Prioritise

Be careful about what you work on, it has to be the important things, the things that are going to take you forward and make a difference.  Plan your day ahead of time, and do the big, important things first.  I have gone back to using a paper diary, which seems to work best for me.  Planning the night before is a good habit to get into.  Just write down all the things you want to achieve the next day (being realistic about the time you have available), and then prioritise them by numbering the most important, starting with priority 1, then 2, then 3.  Leave it at that, then if you polish those off, you can prioritise the next ones.  This is one of the best ways that you can work smart rather than hard.

Be in the moment

Devote all your attention to the task in hand.  Give it your whole concentration.  This is where multi-tasking is not advised.  You can’t give something your full attention if you multi-task.  It may seem more productive, but in the long run it isn’t.  Practising meditation at the start of the day, really helps improve your concentration levels.  It also helps improve your ability to be in the present moment.  If can do your work this way, you will get heaps more done in a more enjoyable way and feel really good about it.

Find purpose in your work

We are hard wired to feel like we are doing something useful.  If our work is not making us feel that way, we won’t be able to motivate ourselves to do it.  Finding meaning and value in what we do is the most important thing we will ever do.  If your job, career or business is not providing this for you, then find something that does.  Or find something within the job, career or business that does.  I often tell the story of the 3 stonemasons, when asked one by one why they were doing their job, one said it was to provide for his family, the other said because he wanted to be the best stone mason, and the third one said he was building something that would last for hundreds of years.  Each had found purpose in their work, in their own way, but the one who would have the most meaning and purpose and hence motivation was the third one.  So make that your challenge this week, to find the meaning and purpose in the work you do.

Have a long term vision

Working hard each day is necessary for most of us, but it can be tricky to do the same old work, day in, day out and find the value and motivation in that.  Cultivating a long term vision can make a difference.  That way, we are working solidly towards something that we value which gives us a reason to work hard and smart.

I hope that’s given you a few ideas to get you underway on doing your work with integrity and honesty and applying those values each day to what you do.  Have a brilliant week.
