“Take the first step in faith, you don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
Dr Martin Luther King
Hi Motivated people, how’s your week been? Did you give the values exercise a go last week? I hope you did and that it helped clarify things for you.
Following on from knowing your values, is allowing yourself to dream. Creating a vision for your life/career/business is a fantastic way to get clear on where you are headed and why. Do we let ourselves do that though? So often, we talk ourselves out of our dreams, particularly if they are big dreams. Fear takes over and stops us before we even get started. That’s when we come up with all the excuses: the timing is wrong, I have to wait until the kids are older, I don’t know enough yet, on and on it goes. They are excuses, but they are masking fear, fear is the main thing that stops us achieving our dreams or even letting ourselves dream. It could be fear of failure, fear of looking stupid, it can even be fear of success. I know, that sounds strange doesn’t it, but it is a real thing – it’s another way of keeping yourself safe. Do you want to achieve your dreams, or do you want to live your life wondering “what if”?
Our beautiful quote from Dr Martin Luther King is very inspiring for us. We don’t have to be absolutely sure, to be absolutely perfect, to know everything in advance before we set off on our journey towards our dreams. We may think that we do, that we have to be prepared and have all our ducks lined up in a row, before we get started. That’s not to say that we shouldn’t plan. I’m all for planning, it’s the thing I help my clients with most of all. However, if all we ever do is plan and get ourselves ready to embark on the life of our dreams, then it won’t happen. We will forever be in “preparation mode”, we need to get into “doing mode”. Otherwise, we will let our opportunities go by and we still won’t have started towards the dream.
All we have to do is take the first step. I know, that can be the hardest thing sometimes. The thing is though, even if it’s hard, actually taking action feels so much better than wishing and hoping. Being clear about where you want to get to helps motivate you to get started. Start with the end result, let yourself dream of how it will be when you have got there, and know that the first little step, however small is starting you off on that amazing journey.
Have a brilliant week, taking small steps towards your big dreams.
