Turning Dreams into Goals – Monday Motivator – 18 September 2017

Hi everyone and welcome to the Monday Motivator.  Hope you had a brilliant week and that last week’s motivator helped you get clear on the choices you have been making and that it helped you start making some great choices that can make a difference for you.

This week I thought it was timely to talk about turning your dreams and wishes into goals.  Having dreams is brilliant, we should all have dreams.  It gives us hope and helps us visualise our future.  However, if we don’t take action our dreams and wishes will stay just that – thoughts in our head.

Why does writing them down make a difference?  It’s because it makes it real, it takes the dream from an idea in your head and transforms that dream into a committment.  Just by writing it down, you are saying that this is important to you and that you will do what it takes to make it eventuate.  Even more powerful is to write the goals as SMART goals.  That stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timed.   I usually add another S to that, which stands for Shared.  If you express your goals in that way, you can’t help but achieve them.  Trust me, I’ve tried it!

I remember the first time I joined a Gym.  The first thing the trainer asked me was what I wanted to achieve.  I said I just wanted to tone up and get fit……I got a telling off!  How would I measure that, she asked me?  How would I ever know when I reached those goals?  I wasn’t very good at goal setting in those days, but I knew what she meant.  My dream was just a wish in my head and a vague one at that.

So I had to write my goals down, I had to be specific, lose 7kg in 12 weeks.  That is specific, measurable and timed, but is it attainable and realistic?  Yes, it’s not massive weight loss in a short amount of time, so it ticks those boxes too.  Sharing my goals also helped keep me accountable and on track, as I had someone else to answer to, otherwise no-one cares if you achieve it or not and you can let yourself off the hook!
